What Is A Domain Name.
Domains can be defined as the identification strings which helps to define the autonomy and control of a website over its presence on the Internet.
Domain names play a very crucial role in identifying the network domain and in representing the Internet Protocol.
These names are employed in URLs so as to identify certain web pages and are created under the supervision of the Domain Name System (DNS). Therefore, any name which has been registered under the DNS can be referred to as a domain name.
A domain consists of a top-level domain (TDL) as well a second-level domain depicted after the use of a dot.
Let’s find out what are TDLs.
Top-Level Domain (TDL)
Domain names are arranged in a chronological manner into further subordinate levels called subdomains.
In these levels, the domain names appearing at the top are called top-level domains (TDL).
The suffix attached to the domain names indicates the specific TDL it belongs to and these are very limited in numbers.
TDLs are further bifurcated into:
- Generic Top Level Domains (gTDLs) which includes the most prominent domains such as .com (used for commercial businesses), .net (for network organizations), .info, .org (for non-profit organizations), .gov (for government agencies), and .edu ( for educational institutions).
- Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTDLs).
Domain Registrars
The administrative unit or company undertaking the task of the registration of domain names are referred to as domain name registrars.
They are accredited with the task of managing the reservation of domain names on the internet in return of holding transactions for their services offered to the public.
These are the top domain registrars include-
- GoDaddy
- NameCheap
- BlueHost
- Domain.com
- HostGator
- DreamHost
- BuyDomains
Out of these domain registrars, GoDaddy is my personal favourite.
