Where Does My Blog Go Next.
I’ve been deliberating over the past few weeks how I should take things forward on my blog.
Recently a couple of things have happened which made me question everything I’ve been working towards.
Table of Contents
THE EU STRIKES AGAIN
The first was the change to the VAT rules in the EU.
I was planning to start offering WordPress setup, help with plugins and coding tweaks as a paid service. Unfortunately, the UK tax authorities confirmed this falls under the new EU tax rules for selling to consumers.
If I provide those services to businesses in the EU it wouldn’t. To confirm I’m working with a business though, they would need to have a VAT number.
It all starts to get a bit complicated and I’d rather avoid that, for now at least.
AND THEN FOR THE UNEXPECTED
The second, much more exciting thing that happened, is that my wife was promoted at work.
It’s a big promotion.
…and it’s left me in limbo.
In truth, I’ve never needed this blog to earn money. Whilst it does give me some income, it’s nothing to write home about.
I’m going to have less time to spend on it going forward, at least in the short term, but I still want it to carry on and evolve.
IS IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY?
I’d always anticipated that earning money would be involved.
I love to help people but I’ve been asked why I don’t charge for some of the things I do behind the scenes for people.
Whilst I’ve shelved the idea of charging for WordPress services, I’ve also had enquiries about ghostwriting and freelancing.
Thank goodness that falls outside the new EU VAT rules.
And that’s the direction I’m going to take for monetisation.
That combined with affiliate marketing is where I see my future in blogging.
WHERE NEXT FOR THIS BLOG?
It’s business as usual.
I’ll continue to write on here once a week to share where my blogging journey goes next.
One thing I’m going to avoid as much as I can is not to follow the blogging herd by avoiding “traffic jam” posts as Danny Brown describes them.
I’ve tried being an integral part of a blogging community with endless blog hopping and commenting and it’s just not for me.
It felt like I was going round in circles, seeing the same people over and over again.
I do enjoy connecting with people but intend to do that on social media and with a more realistic approach to blog commenting.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Have you gone through a similar evaluation of where you’re going with your blog?
Did you come out okay on the other side?
